Mold in your attic.
Found mold in your attic? Here's whether it's a claim
🚫 Usually NOT covered:
• Poor attic ventilation or blocked soffit vents
• Bathroom or dryer vents dumping moist air into the attic
• Condensation building up over many seasons
• A slow roof leak that went on for months
Insurers treat these as maintenance, wear and tear, or long-term seepage, and most policies exclude them.
✅ May be covered:
• Wind or hail damage that opened up the roof
• Ice dams that forced water under the shingles
• A tree limb or storm event that let water in
When mold results from a sudden, covered event, there may be coverage. Keep in mind many policies cap mold remediation at a limited amount (often $5,000–$10,000), so read your fungi or mold endorsement.
What to do if you find it:
Take photos and video before anything is touched
Look for the source: roof damage, vents, stains on the sheathing
Don't tear anything out or start cleanup beyond preventing further damage
Report it to your insurer promptly; delays can hurt a claim
Get the cause documented by a qualified inspector
Not sure whether your attic mold is a covered loss? I'll review your policy and the damage before you file.
